La chiesa risale al 1188 quando in una bolla il Papa Clemente III parla di una cappella dedicata a San Cerbone a Montorsaio anche se non si hanno notizie certe.
Molto probabilmente si trattava di una primordiale sede parrocchiale.
Come si diceva prima, non si sono trovate notizie certe sulla sua fondazione, ma abbiamo informazioni sulla sua intitolazione a San Cerbone vescovo che risale al XII sec.; mentre, il titolo di San Michele, le deriva dal romitorio di San Michele Arcangelo che si trovava fuori le mura del paese e che è caduto in rovina nel XVIII sec.
La chiesa è in stile romanico anche se nel tempo ha avuto diversi e radicali rifacimenti. In un suo recente restauro, nel 1984, sono stati portati alla luce i resti delle fondamenta dell’abside semicircolare originario della chiesa.
Al suo interno, più precisamente sull’altare, si trova un delicato e meraviglioso dipinto di Sano di Pietro, famoso pittore e miniatore di scuola senese, raffigurante una Madonna con Bambino. Il dipinto esposto è una copia, mentre l’originale si trova nel Museo Diocesano di Grosseto.
Church of the Saints Cerbone and Michele. This church dates back to 1188 when in a papal bull the Pope Clemente III talks about a chapel dedicated to S. Cerbone in Montorsaio, although there isn’t any real proof of this event. It most likely was a primordial parochial seat. As we said before, no certain information has been found about its foundation, but we do have information about its dedication to S. Cerbone bishop dating back to the twelfth century; on the other hand, the title of S. Michele comes from the hermitage of S. Michele Arcangelo that was located outside of the town walls and that fell in ruins in the eighteenth century.
The church has a romantic style, although in time it has had some radical changes. A recent restoration, in 1984, brought to light the remains of the foundations of the original semicircular apse of the church. In its interior, precisely on the altar, we can find a delicate and beautiful painting by Sano di Pietro, famous painter and miniaturist of the Senese School, portraying a Madonna with the Baby. The painting displayed is a copy, while the original one is in the Diocesan Museum of Grosseto.
